ADD/ADHD
Over the course of the 13 years my son was in school I identified learning problems, one of which turned out to be ADD without hyperactivity. When my son's school first tested him, they said he was fine. On demanding a second educational evaluation, his disabilities were clearly identified. Unfortunately, the school conrinued to ignore his special learning needsw. I began to research the field, and determined that his needs could not be met in that school system. At the beginning of fourth grade, we moved to another state. At once his needs were addressed. I was involved at every step, attending all meetings and participating in the formulation of all IEP approaches. With my help he made 3 1/2 years of reading progress in one year! When he moved to middle school they were not as attuned to his needs, so I learned how to request testing and to insist on modifications which I constantly monitored for success. By the time my son was in high school I was volunteering to take notes for other parents in their IEP meetings, and helping them write better IEPs to get get the teaching modifications implemented that their children needed. I will give other parents the benefit of my knowledge of the system, and of teaching strategies adapted for the individual child.
